As part of the work I do, Iā€™m a photography teacher and the following are a collection of my tutorials which live over on my YouTube Channel.

How to Nail Exposure using Manual Mode

A lot of my street photography is made up of contrasty images where the majority of the frame falls to deep shadow. The question I get asked most is 'how do you expose for this sort of shot'? The short answer is 'Manual Mode'... and the long answer is this video. I try and break down exactly how to expose correctly for any scene using aperture, shutter speed and ISO to balance your exposure triangle. This is probably a good video for any amateurs out there who are looking to take more control of their photography.

White Balance: My (slightly odd) Approach

In this video I share my 'slightly odd' approach to white balance to make sure I'm capturing the world as my eye sees it. I talk through what white balance is, how it affects the colours in our images, and my reasons for a, perhaps unusual, choice.

Photography Composition: Thinking Beyond the Rules

In this video I talk about learning to use your intuition when composing your photographs. By understanding what draws the human eye we can then trust our gut more often when placing the elements in our frames to come up with more creative compositions.

Shooting Portraits with One Speedlight

I think the assumption is that to get into shooting portraits with strobes, it's going to be a very expensive and technical pursuit. But in my experience you can actually achieve some great images with very little gear. In this video I share how you can create dramatic portraits using only one speedlight and a cheap modifier.

How to improve your food photography at home (without having to buy fancy gear)

My first professional job as a full time photographer was actually as a food photographer. In this video I will give you some tips to improve your own food photography without having to buy fancy lights or camera gear. You'll also meet my friend Vla who is a health and fitness guru and he'll be doing the cooking and helping us with the styling. I hope this helps you get better shots of your dishes.

Controlling Colour in your Photography (Hue, Saturation and Luminance)

In this video I give you some practical advice for being more intentional about the colours in your images, and how to limit your colour space in Adobe Lightroom and Photoshop using the Hue, Saturation and Luminance tool (or HSL sliders). I also give you examples of complementary and analogous colour schemes from the world of cinema, and talk about what we mean when we say we are trying to achieve a 'cinematic look' to our photography.

How to Shoot Corporate Headshot Photography

One of the jobs you will find yourself doing as a portrait photographer is Corporate Headshots. This isn't usually glamorous work. You often only have a couple of minutes with each person and so speed and consistency are the name of the game. In this video I share a pretty comprehensive overview of the system I use when shooting Corporate Headshot Photography. I hope you pick up some useful tips.

How to Photograph Big Products

This is part one of a series teaching you the basics of shooting larger products and putting them on a white background. This first episode teaches you lighting and camera settings. Part two and three will talk about cutting objects out and placing them on a white backgroud, creating drop shadows and recolouring fabrics. Find them over on my YouTube channel.
